It was 1966 and though to that point, he had been mostly a poet, he now immersed himself and his words into songwriting. ![]() The great Judy Collins tells of the time she encouraged Leonard to come on stage and sing his song "Suzanne" with her. Although Cohen passed away in 2016 and was not interviewed for this film, precious archival footage allows us to see him expressing his own thoughts alongside new and recorded interviews of those who knew him for so long. it was ever-evolving, same as the writer. We know there are multiple versions of the song, and Leonard admits the song was never finished. Perhaps there is no better evidence of this than his pursuit of writing lyrics to "Hallelujah." We see the dozens of notebooks filled with his handwritten lyrics. Someone offers the description of LC as "a spiritual seeker", and that appears to have been the case most of his life. Leonard Cohen is on stage and sings the immediately recognizable first "secret chord" line of "Hallelujah." This would be his final live performance. We open on Decemin Auckland, New Zealand. Collaborators for more than 25 years, documentarians Daniel Geller and Dayna Goldfine knew tackling Cohen as a subject would be too much, so by taking inspiration from Alan Light's book, "The Holy or the Broken: Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley, and the Unlikely Ascent of 'Hallelujah'", they were able to approach him through his most recognizable and most oft-covered song, "Hallelujah." The result is a captivating two hours that will appeal to Leonard Cohen devotees and enlighten those new to his work. Leonard Cohen was an enigma, yet also a treasure trove of thought-provoking work crafted over fifty years. If you are at all into economics or economic-style thinking, this podcast is for you. ![]() Odd Lots is hosted by Joe Weisenthal and Tracy Alloway. This topic was entirely off my radar screen until I listened to a recent episode of one of my favorite podcasts ( transcript here ): Odd Lots. The goal of this post is to explain what the hell is going on here and defend those three claims. Given how much it could do for our ports and thus our economy, as well as the reclamation projects we could do, repeal seems pretty damn important. The actions that could repeal the act mostly involve a relatively small amount of standard-issue lobbying effort - so it’s tractable. An illustration of this is that my exploration of this led to it having a Wikipedia page. There’s a bunch of talk recently about the Dredge Act which is how I noticed it, but that’s different from the actions that actually lead to repeal - it’s still neglected. I claim that, EA style, this is highly (1) important, (2) tractable and (3) neglected. ![]() (This isn’t about shipping - that’s the Jones Act, which has similar ownership rules for shipping within the US, and which we’ll get to later.) It says, to paraphrase, no underwater digging - to repair ports, or build bigger ones, or fix waterways - unless the boat doing the digging was built in the US, and is owned and operated by Americans. We must repeal the Foreign Dredge Act of 1906. Yet if I had to pick one policy that was the Platonic ideal of stupid, the thing that has almost zero upside and also has the best ratio of 'amount of damage this is doing to America’ versus ‘reasons why we can’t stop being idiots about this’ there is (so far) a clear winner. My Covid posts have covered quite a lot of them. ![]() There are a lot of ludicrously terrible government laws, regulations and policies across all the domains of life. ![]() ![]() Show a broadside to another cruiser and you get citadeled, probably repeatedly. They, like the Russian and British line are also fragile. The Japanese can torpedo spam, particularly kiting away. But, they lack torpedoes so you have to watch your range against stuff that has those. For example, I prefer gunboats as cruisers so I generally play the US heavy line. It depends largely on your style of play. I have had a lot of fun with them.Įach line has it's strengths and weaknesses. There are tons out there so you can see how they perform and decide which you feel is most suited to your play style. I don't have the greatest win rate in random battles but I have fun playing those ships. But the style of play of those lines just isn't comfortable for me as much as the others. I have only played the USSR and French cruisers up to tier 9. I haven't played the UK Minotaur as much as the others, But when I did I usually supported my DDs and help contested caps with it. Hug around covering islands and support my team with consumables while taking pot shots at the enemy whenever it presents itself. The US cruisers Worcester and Des Moines I play the same. The ship is almost impervious to fire damage. I run both damage control module upgrades and the legendary module on top of that with a survival Captain build and fire reduction flags. I head straight at HE cruisers whenever I can. Love sending a torpedo volley back at them and watch them flood/burn to death. Those factors influence how I play my Zao usually in the match. Whatever I feel like depending on how may radar cruisers there are or if there is a CV. ![]() ![]() I play the IJN Zao as a long range sniper (with range module) or sometimes as DD escort on caps. ![]() ![]() ![]() Restoration work began in late October 2004, when the tank received a running Ford GAA engine and a new paint job. When the Sherman tank arrived at the Museum in December 2000, its engine was completely rusted and it was painted in a color appropriate to the Korean War era rather than World War II. Because the tank was manufactured in 1943, it is almost certain that it was deployed overseas during the war, although no battle damage was discovered. No unit markings were discovered when previous coats of paint were removed from the tank. The Museum’s Sherman is an M4A3, built by Ford Motor Company in 1943. This particular tank, a rare M4A3E9 model (only a few hundred were built), carries appliqué armor for additional protection. ![]() Though frequently outgunned by their German counterparts, Shermans proved easier to maintain-often fixed on the battlefield. The Sherman tank’s primary role was infantry support, spearheading attacks as well as bolstering defensive positions. Notorious for their flammability, Shermans were nicknamed “Ronsons” after a lighter with the slogan “lights every time.” The model proved itself somewhat effective against German Mk II and Mk IV Panzers, but it was thoroughly outclassed by the Tiger, Panther, and King Tiger tanks. Initially developed to replace the M3 "Grant/Lee" medium tank, the first Shermans were manufactured in 1942 and some early productions examples saw combat in North Africa in 1943. They were used in all combat theaters-not only by the United States, but also by Great Britain, the Free French, China, and even the Soviet Union. More than 50,000 Shermans were produced between 19. The Sherman tank was the most commonly used American tank in World War II. ![]() |
